From September 2012 to March 2013 I interned as a Staff Writer at the Argentina Independent, a print and online English-language newspaper based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, serving a readership of expats, students, and English-speaking Argentines. I wrote news features, special interest pieces, and reviews, as well as translated news briefs from Spanish and edited other interns’ work for publication.
During my time at the Indy I reported on social programs in the city’s villas, or shantytowns, and the threats they faced from municipal budget cuts; a controversial law that encouraged the hunting of the Patagonian puma population; the complexities and implications of the Brazilian Mensalão scandal; and Buenos Aires’ little-known Korean-Argentine community, among other things.
